- The Round the Island
(of Poros) Race -
Every year for the past 26 years on the last
weekend of October, Greek Sails have celebrated the end of a happy season of
work and sailing by organising a weekend of sail racing for local and visiting
sailors alike.
The ‘Round Poros race’ is a strictly amateur
affair with the emphasis firmly on fun and socialising rather than serious
racing or results and provides a pleasant finish to the year’s sailing. The
race is slightly smaller that the better known race around the UK Isle of Wight
with the numbers of entrants being counted in tens rather than thousands.
Everybody is welcome, Greek Sails customers, quayside workers and sailors from around the area, so if you have your own yacht in the area or you fancy an end-of-season yacht charter with a difference, this is an excellent opportunity to have some fun and pit your sailing abilities against others without any of it being taken too seriously.
The weekend is organised into two days of sail racing, one around the ‘cans’ in Poros bay on the Saturday followed on the Sunday with a race anti-clockwise around the island of Poros. The Saturday evening is always spent in a local quayside bar with the prize-giving for the first day’s racing, and then on the Sunday evening following the actual ‘Round the Island race’, there is a quayside barbeque with Greek-sized portions of food and drink and a second prize-giving for the Sunday’s race winner plus the overall weekend winner.
The race uses a handicap system so as to give all boats an equal chance. You may have the ‘hottest racing yacht’ around, but your handicap will reflect this. Likewise, if your boat doesn’t quite have racing lines or sails, then this too will be reflected. The result is a keen race.
We look forward to welcoming you to Poros and competing against you. There is a nominal fee to cover race organisation, refreshments and prizes.
